There are a number of benefits to erasing DLT tapes with a degausser, including ensuring that all your DLT are suitable to be used in the DLT1 drives, using a degausser to erase DLT and other magnetic tape can extend their life thus providing cost savings, degaussing DLT can extend the life of them by up to four times. There is a reduction in "down time" of computers & data processing equipment arising from faulty or imperfect tape media, an expense which can be eliminated by erasing the media with a degausser.
The quality in the performance of degaussed (erased) tape media is reported to be higher and improves efficiency.
